In Staten Island today, nearly 15 thousand people traveled by ferry, car and bus to a attend a rally and protest against police brutality. The rally was organized by Reverend Al Sharpton’s National Action Network in response to the choking death of Eric Garner by New York City Police.
Garner was put into what appears to be an illegal choke hold by Officer Daniel Pantaleo. The incident was captured on video by Garner’s friend, Ramsey Orta. His last words were “I can’t breath”.
Several familiy members of children who died during recent incidents of police brutality were present at todays event in support of the Garner family. The parents of two children who were recently shot by the City police, Ramarley Graham and Kimani Gray we in attendance today.
Also in attendance was City Council member Jamaane Williams who made an impassioned speech about Dr. Martin Luther King’s dream.
