Washington DC—Hundreds of Tesla electric vehicle dealerships saw lines of citizens line up outside them urging consumers to boycott the flailing car company. The decentralized grassroots actions have targeted the world’s richest man, Elon Musk over his continued interference in Federal government operations.
A surge of anger towards the mega billionaire has fueled the Tesla dealership boycott actions which are now in their seventh week. The boycotts are credited with taking down, at least in part, over 40% of the car company’s stock value.
In Washington DC over 200 danced outside the Tesla dealership in Georgetown drawing many new participants to the festive block-party atmosphere along the busy M Street shopping corridor. Passing motorists joined in the celebratory mood by honking, giving thumbs up approval, and slowing to take photos and videos. The mood couldn’t have been described as a protest but more of a celebration in defiance of an increasingly authoritarian presidency.
Meanwhile at the Arlington Virginia Tesla, hundreds also joined in a community boycott line became more of a block-party celebration with over 250 citizens dancing, wearing costumes, and holding hand-made signs, as passing motorists honked approval. Some activists passed out anti Tesla bumper stickers to Tesla drivers as they stopped in front of the Tesla dealership.
Citizens Play Power Card Against Tesla
The Tesla boycott lines are one of the remaining actions left for a citizenry stunned by the breath and speed at which Elon Musk and his so called Department of Government Efficiency (Doge) has taken apart multiple government agencies, bureaus, and essential functions. Where Congress has failed to take decisive action against the Executive branch power grab, the citizens are taking actions on the streets at the dealerships.
The Trump-Musk presidency is growing more desperate to assert its authority as multiple Federal courts rebuff its policies in rulings with temporary restraining orders. Nearly every one of Tump’s executive orders has been delayed or stayed with temporary restraining orders as its Department of Justice attorneys have failed to successfully defend the executive branch policies before judges who were previously appointed by both conservative and liberal presidencies that came before the Trump-Musk presidency.
Usually cases defended by the Department of Justice see a high success rate and are infrequently lost on appeal. But under the Trump-Musk policies the opposite has been the result of the spate of illegal executive orders.
There are over 80 cases pending in defense of class action suits brought by plaintiffs seeking relief against executive orders. Plaintiff’s case issues extend way beyond the initial stages of the Doge Federal government agency takeover policies of the Trump-Musk power grab. Other cases also involve the rights green card holders who have been snatched from the streets over their published views or activism in opposition to Israel’s attacks on Gaza. There are also cases involving immigrant’s access to due process in court and whether they can be removed from the country without a hearing. All the Trump-Musk executive policies have thus far failed to have a favorable Federal court judgment.
The judiciary is the last part of government still in a constitutional checks and balances functioning role. Regarding the separation of power, it is the last institution capable of culling any further Trump-Musk power grabs. The Republican dominated Congress has effectively ceded what remaining power it had to the Trump-Musk presidency.
Why Tesla Boycott Actions Matter
The growing Tesla boycott actions in the streets and the ease with which they have attracted so many willing to join and support them reflect restlessness in the people. Many genuinely disapprove of what Trump-Musk has done to the Federal government over the past 3 months. Tesla Boycott actions are tamping down Musk’s stock value although it is not possible to numerically determine how much of this decline is attributable to the boycott activities. But by Musk’s own accounts they are having an impact. During an extended interview on a cable channel Musk ruminated the actions as propaganda and lies against his company.
The Tesla boycott actions have harmed Musk’s reputation as more attention is focused on his wrecking ball approach to the Federal government agencies. They have harmed Musk’s reputation in both the national and international arena because they have encouraged others to sell their Tesla cars or boycott the company altogether.
But none have harmed Musk’s reputation so much as his own actions. He partook in a nazi salute on inauguration day and later drew more condemnation from his chainsaw act during the Conservative Political Action Conference in February. These were seen as insulting and insensitive towards millions of Americans who have been financially harmed by his Federal government agency takedowns.
The Tesla dealership boycott actions have simply lassoed the resulting rage against Musk and focused it like a solar magnifying glass against his most valuable asset—his Tesla stock value.
Tesla actions were also reported in many countries in the European Union, including France, Germany, and the U.K.
